Presentation

The CDPP is the national data centre in France for the solar system plasmas, serving the space plasma physics community.

The CDPP has been created in 1998 by both the CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) and the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). Since 2014 the CDPP is also under administrative supervision of Université Paul Sabatier and the Observatoire de Paris. The CDPP is a member of the PNST (Programme National Soleil-Terre) and of the ASOV (Action Spécifique Observatoire Virtuel).

The CDPP is mostly hosted at IRAP (Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie), located at Toulouse, city of the south-west of France well known for its gastronomy, its aero-spatial industry and its rugby team. CNES (Toulouse) and LESIA (Observatoire de Paris) also host CDPP members.

The primary purpose of the CDPP is to assure long-term preservation of data relevant to the physics of naturally occurring plasmas in the solar system, especially data from experiments which are either French or have strong French participation.
The data archived and rendered accessible at CDPP were obtained under a timespan of more than 40 years onboard satellites or from ground observatories, from or around the Earth, planetary environments or the solar wind. The CDPP continuously improves its capabilities in order to facilitate the scientific exploitation of these data and to help data distribution of future missions. In that aim, the CDPP develops tools and services helping data extraction, treatment and analysis. The CDPP is also involved in the development of the interoperability and of the virtual observatories.
